Apprentices have to be at least 16 (or 18 for the IT programme), but otherwise, anyone of any age can apply, as long as they’ve got:
Plus, they’ve lived here for three of the past ten years.
We’ll specify more for some programmes, but most need a minimum of two GCSEs/O-Levels, or another equivalent, at grades 9-5 (A*-C) including Maths and English.
Candidates don’t usually need relevant previous work experience, but we’ll want to see a keen interest in learning about the business area.
You might not have heard of us, but we’re involved in protecting the UK’s interests around the world. We work with government-level customers at home and overseas, to offer services including construction, digital solutions, communications, logistics and counter eavesdropping, all with the highest levels of security in mind.
What does that mean? Well, let’s take our key customer, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. They run the UK’s embassies worldwide – and we help construct, maintain and protect their buildings using sophisticated technology. We might renovate an embassy in Paris, or provide a high commission in Singapore with new secure servers. We could be making a building earthquake-proof, designing its CCTV network, or moving a nation’s electoral system to the Cloud.
That’s the kind of work we provide to government bodies every day – and it’s the sort of work our apprentices will learn to master, from day one.
University isn’t always the best option anymore. If you’ve got a driven young person who’s keen to get to work right now, an apprenticeship at FCO Services might be the best choice they ever make. Here’s why:
While our apprentices work, they study for academic and professional qualifications that help them stand out in the market.
On top of a competitive salary, we pay our apprentices’ tuition fees and membership fees for enrolment into professional bodies such as the IET.
Surrounded by apprentices and colleagues from all sorts of backgrounds and cultures, they’ll quickly make friends and feel welcome for who they are.
Most of our apprentices gain full-time positions at the end of the course, so there’s no post-university job search here.
Many of our apprentices will travel overseas with us, giving them a broader outlook – with their travel expenses paid too.
Our apprentices get stuck into work for government-level customers – so they’ll have something to be proud of, straightaway.
Our colleagues have the same benefits as employees across the Civil Service, including a strong pension, sick pay and a generous holiday entitlement.
Gaining excellent experience and qualifications, there’s no limit to what they could do next – with the chance to climb through our organisation and travel the world.
If they haven’t already seen it, share our website and let your young person know the opportunities on offer here.
On our main page, you’ll find a list of the programmes on offer and what each one involves. Have a chat and work out which one could suit them best.
A fresh pair of eyes is always helpful: when they’ve finished their application, take a look for them and check for any mistakes. We want them to be themselves and be honest though, so don’t write it for them.
